Travertine Floor Tile

Unlike many other types of flooring, travertine floor tile has been around for decades. This type of rock is beautiful, durable, and entirely worth a moment of your time.

Technically, travertine floor tile consists of sedimentary rock that has been created from various carbonate minerals. Once water that is laced with carbon dioxide soaks though limestone, it creates an extremely porous rock that is sometimes referred to as “Calcareous Tuff.” While you can find some type of this rock that are pure white, most of the time it can only be found in a yellowish brown color due to its natural state.

This type of rock can only be found near lakes, valleys, and other types of water filled areas. Interestingly, this material takes thousands of years before it can even form. While many manufacturers supply this type of material, it can only be found within one section of Italy called Tivoli. If you are wondering as to the durability of this material, allow history to be your guide – the Colosseum in Rome, the Getty Center in California, and the Sacre Coeur in Paris have all been made out of this rock (durable indeed!).

Within the United States, there are only a small number of importers that bring this type of rock from Italy and Turkey (it can now be found in Turkey too), though there are more than one million tonnes requested yearly. As you can imagine, travertine floor tile is not a cheap option, though it is one that will last for many centuries. When it comes to selecting materials for your home, it is far better to choose those that will last for years, rather than to opt for those less expensive types.

If you do not have the budget to purchase expensive flooring materials, you may want to start saving your money and wait to install quality items. Though it may seem rather insignificant, if you have to replace your inexpensive floors within a few years, this will not be worth the money that you originally spent. Of course, in the end, it’s up to you... just considering those better materials that will remain in your home for a lifetime is a good idea.

In every manner, travertine floor tile is a good investment. If you want a material that will last for decades and look magnificent, you just can’t go wrong with this type of rock.
